Gentrification consumes Baton Rouge local culture

The North Gate area of the University is slowly vanishing, and in its place rises a bland generic menace.

This process is called "gentrification," and Louisiana is just starting to learn what it means.

Gentrification is a simple process - older buildings, business and apartments are purchased, demolished and replaced by more modern developments that increase property value.

At face value, gentrification seems like simple urban remodeling. Make no mistake though - gentrification is a serious social event.

During the past few years, several area landmarks have been demolished and replaced with new businesses. There's nothing wrong with development, but it shouldn't come at the expense of our local culture.

The easiest place to see this change in Baton Rouge is in the North Gates area of the University.
